Hospice volunteer  training for the 21st century

Ready   As soon as someone expresses an interest in becoming a Hospice Volunteer you are ready!  No more hoping that the volunteer will wait for the next set of training classes.

SET      Set them up with the tote bag filled with the training DVD’s and a manual to begin their personalized volunteer training program.   Keep in touch by phone or e-mail & face to face visits, then file their competency quizzes.  Cover your hospice’s history, record keeping and other specialized information individually or in small groups. Use these face to face meetings to build relationships and help the new volunteer feel part of the team.

GO       Once they have finished the Hospice Volunteer Training Series (including all the quizzes) & any additional requirements to meet your particular standards, complete the final interview process.  Give them their first assignment and they are ready to GO!

READY... SET... GO... Simple, efficient, and cost effective volunteer training for hospices ready to embrace 21st century training techniques

Benefits for both the hospice and the volunteer:

strokestrokestrokestroke
  1. Cost Saver:  Home based training is much more economical than running classroom sessions for a small number of students.
  2. Self-contained and ready to go: DVD’s, and a manual in a ready to go tote bag couldn’t be easier.
  3. Time efficient and effective movie segments: Allows the volunteer in training to use their own DVD player to watch the movies at times when it is convenient for them.  (If they don’t have one - consider providing a loaner portable DVD player)
  4. Medicare required topics:  Simple & easy way to insure that everyone is trained consistently on the subjects required by Medicare.
  5. Consistent & easy to follow:  By taking advantage of current technology, the hospice insures that all volunteers receive consistent and well presented information.  (Your staff may be fantastic, but they may not be good teachers)
  6. Volunteers begin their training immediately:  While their interest is peaked.... no more waiting for the next set of training classes & potentially losing the volunteer to other organizations.
  7. Makes training on-going:  Resulting in more volunteers being available on a regular basis
  8. Allows staff to concentrate on client care
  9. Saves time & makes training convenient for the volunteer:  No more travel time & juggling long classes with work and family obligations.
  10. Recruitment Tool: In order to recruit younger, busier volunteers, hospices must find flexible ways to get them trained. Independent study meets that need.
  11. Money, Time, Convenience, Consistency:  All this plus a regularly expanding pool of trained volunteers.
  12. Worried you won’t have enough face-to-face time with your volunteers?  No problem - with the home study providing the core training, you are free to focus on your specialized needs as well as building strong relationships.  Imagine the possibilities.... since training is on-going you’ll only have a few in training at a time - so meet with them individually, or schedule a small group.  Want to require at least one or two group sessions?  That works - just plan for them on a regular basis as needed.  Cover your specialized needs, answer questions, have discussions, do role plays and then focus on building community and motivation.  With the right community building activities and motivational stories, you can spend less face-to-face time with your volunteers, while still building strong relationships.  How?  Because you are focusing on them as people, rather than trying to cover hours and hours of materials.  Motivate * Inspire * Build a Sense of Community
  13. Do you have a required number of hours of training?  Great - the independent study can cover a large portion of those hours.  The DVD’s are about 6 hours.  The 15 competency quizzes can be rated at an average of 20 - 40 minutes each.  Some volunteers will take their time, review the materials and slowly go through the questions.  Others will rush right through - so use an average.  15 quizzes at 20 minutes each = 300 minutes or 5 hours.  Add your additional individual or group meetings and your volunteer will soon have the required number of training hours needed to meet most any standard.
